French iPhone users now have access to Tap to Pay, which enables businesses to accept contactless payments from credit cards directly on their iOS handset – no additional hardware required.
The service has been gradually roiling out around the world since it launched in 2022.
Apple Pay says bonjour to France
Shoppers should be familiar with contactless payment systems like Apple Pay. They let buyers purchase items with their iPhone, no credit card necessary. But a special reader was required… until Apple introduced Tap to Pay.
And the system goes beyond that. Businesses can use an iPhone to accept money from credit cards that support wireless payments.
France is the latest country where the system is available.
“We are very excited to offer Tap to Pay on iPhone to merchants throughout France, so that they have a simple, secure and confidential way to accept contactless payments while benefiting from the power, security and usability of the iPhone,” said Jennifer Bailey, VP of Apple Pay and Apple Wallet, in a machine translation from French. “With more than 90% of bank cards in France equipped with contactless technology, and the increasing adoption of contactless payments, merchants will be able to accept payments from their customers with a simple gesture on their iPhone. ”
Tap to Pay launched first in the United States and has since expanded to the UK and Australia.
