A new documentary claiming to be the “definitive” look at the murder of John Lennon — the former Beatle and enduring cultural icon — is coming to Apple TV+. Unfortunately, though, the streaming service hasn’t yet said when the exhaustively researched, three-part series will arrive.
But we do know the narrator of John Lennon: Murder Without A Trial. It’s Emmy Award-winning actor Kiefer Sutherland, the streaming service said.

Apple said the new “docuseries offers the most comprehensive look into the truth of the tragic murder of music and cultural icon John Lennon, and the investigation and conviction of Mark David Chapman.”
Narrated by Sutherland (24, The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial), the show brings exclusive new interviews, unseen photos and access to facts from authorities through Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests. Apparently we can expect “shocking details,” even 43 years after the shooting and with the killer still incarcerated. In 2022 he was denied parole for a 12th time.

The docuseries features exclusive eyewitness interviews and previously unseen crime scene photos, shedding new light on the life and murder of music and cultural icon John Lennon, and the investigation and conviction of Mark David Chapman, his confessed killer.
John Lennon: Murder Without A Trial is the most thoroughly researched examination of John Lennon’s 1980 murder, which shocked and saddened the world. The production was granted extensive [FOIA] requests from the New York City Police Department, the Board of Parole and the District Attorney’s office.
And the series includes exclusive interviews with eyewitnesses — speaking for the first time — along with some of Lennon’s closest friends, revealing shocking details of Lennon’s tragic murder. [The series] also features interviews with Chapman’s defense lawyers, psychiatrists, detectives and prosecutors.
Well-credentialed production team
BAFTA and Emmy Award-winning 72 Films produced the series. Nick Holt (The Murder Trial, Responsible Child) and Rob Coldstream (Jade: The Reality Star Who Changed Britain) directed.
Executive producers are David Glover (9/11: One Day in America), Mark Raphael (Crime and Punishment) and Coldstream. Simon Bunney and Louis Lee Ray also produced.
