After the lighthearted musicals of the first season of Schmigadoon!, fans of the Apple TV+ series will need to adjust for darker and sexier fare in season two. The first trailer shows the upcoming episodes will be set in a new town, where everyone lives in a musical from the 1960s or 1970s.

Schmigadoon! season 2 sings and dances through Schmicago

The first season of the Emmy-winning comedy tells the story of Josh (played by Keegan-Michael Key) and Melissa (Cecily Strong), a couple who stumble into a magical town where everyone lives by the rules of classic musicals. The series served up a delightful mix of homage and parody of the great musicals of the ’40s and ’50s, including (of course) Brigadoon but also Oklahoma!, The Music Man and many more.

In season two of Schmigadoon!, the couple travels to Schmicago, a reimagined world of 1960s and 1970s musicals.

So much talent

Season one of Schmigadoon! garnered Emmy and AFI Award wins, plus a Critics’ Choice Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress for Kristin Chenoweth.

The show achieved an 89% critics’ approval rating from review-aggregation site Rotten Tomatoes. And the Cult of Mac review agreed: “If you like musicals, you’ll almost certainly love Schmigadoon!.”

Many of the stars are returning for season two, including Ariana DeBose, Martin Short, Dove Cameron, Jaime Camil, Kristin Chenoweth, Alan Cumming, Ann Harada and Jane Krakowski and Aaron Tveit. Tituss Burgess and Patrick Page join the cast for the upcoming season.

The series was co-created by Cinco Paul and Ken Daurio. Paul serves as showrunner and wrote all the original songs.

Schmigadoon! will return on Wednesday, April 5, with the first two episodes of its six-episode second season, followed by new episodes every Wednesday.

Enjoy the complete first season of Schmigadoon! streaming on Apple TV+. Watching comes with a $6.99-per-month subscription, but there are no commercials.
