From the “better late than never” category, a version of the Zoom video conferencing app has launched for Apple TV. This means it’s now easier to make Zoom calls using a TV’s large display.

Turns out the long wait was actually Apple’s fault.

tvOS 17 enabled Zoom for Apple TV… finally

Zoom was a 2020 phenomena during the COVID-19 pandemic. It rose from obscurity to a household name with 3.9 billion people around the globe under stay-at-home orders or requests. There were versions of the video-chatting software for iPhone, iPad and Mac, but not Apple TV.

That said, Zoom‘s developer can’t be blamed. No Apple TV has the necessary camera, and it wasn’t until tvOS 17 debuted earlier in 2023 that Apple’s streaming box supported Continuity Camera, allowing the device to make use of the camera built into an iPhone or iPad to provide the video feed.

When Apple announced tvOS 17, it said a version of Zoom for Apple TV was on the way. And now it’s here.

The official description of the application says:

“With Zoom you are one-click away from video meetings with gallery views, and screen sharing. Connect with anyone on other devices, Windows or Mac computers, mobile phones and tablets, Zoom Rooms, traditional conference room systems, and telephones.”

It has the same general feature set as the iPhone or Mac versions. That means calendar integration, friend invites, in-meeting text chats, breakout rooms and more.

Zoom – for Home TV is available now in the App Store. It’s free, and offers free video meetings of up to 40 minutes long with up to 100 attendees. A Pro account with longer meetings and other features is $12.49 per month.

The software is compatible with the second-generation or later Apple TV 4K.

While this new version of Zoom would have been better about three years ago, any app that shows some love for Apple TV is awesome.

Price: Free with Pro account upgrades starting at $12.49 per month
