Apple TV+ landed Hijack, a thriller starring Idris Elba set on a plane that’s been hijacked. It will be a seven-episode series covering seven hours of action, so it’ll be told in real time — a technique that should be familiar to fans of 24.

Apple’s streaming service loves thrillers, and already has quite a few of them, with more on the way.

Idris Elba hijacks Apple TV+ with mid-air thriller

Apple calls Hijack “a tense thriller that follows the journey of a hijacked plane as it makes its way to London over a seven hour flight, as authorities on the ground scramble for answers.”

The Emmy-nominated and SAG-winning Idris Elba will take the lead. He’ll play, “an accomplished negotiator in the business world who needs to step up and use all his guile to try and save the lives of the passengers — but his high-risk strategy could be his undoing,” according to Apple.

Elba will also produce Hijack, which is the initial result of a “first-look” deal his production company has with Apple TV+.

The series is being written by George Kay (Lupin, Criminal”) and will be directed by Jim Field Smith (“Criminal, The Wrong Mans).

With Apple just now signing off on the deal, it’s not known when Hijack will appear on its streaming service.

Plenty o’ thrillers on Apple TV+

The series will join an expanding collection of thrillers on Apple TV+, including the critically acclaimed Severance and Slow Horses.

Looking head, the streaming service has Shining Girls, a metaphysical thriller debuting April 29 that’s based on a bestselling novel. And there’s Disclaimer starring Cate Blanchett and Kevin Kline.

Watching Idris Elba in Hijack, or any of broad range of shows on Apple TV+, comets with a $4.99 per month subscription.
