Several companies, including Samsung and Western Digital, have cut prices on SSDs and memory cards for World Backup Day. Save up to $80 on the rugged Samsung T7 Shield, while the SSD that’s WD’s closest rival is also on sale.
A 1TB SanDisk microSD card is surprisingly affordable. And the JetDriveLite specially made for MacBooks card readers is available at a discount, too.
Some of the deals are only available on March 31, so don’t procrastinate.

Today is the day to backup your files
“March 31st is World Backup Day – the one day a year that is dedicated to reminding us of the importance of protecting and making copies of our most important files, from family photos to vacation videos and game libraries to work documents,” notes Samsung.
Your Mac can automatically make copies of your files with Time Machine, software built into macOS. But the data needs to go onto a drive. This can be an SSD or an SD card plugged into the card reader built into some newer models .
iPad and iPhone make their automatic backups to iCloud, but any Apple tablet with a USB-C port can access an external SSD. Use Apple’s Files app to manually move files, or try OWC’s Copy That to easily backup your images onto an SSD.
Save on Samsung SSDs
The Samsung T7 is a top-quality solid-state drive for consumers. It’s not much bigger than a credit card but can hold terabytes of files. The Cult of Mac review said “it’s well built and offers outstanding performance.” The 2TB version is currently available for $140, which is $40 off the regular cost.
There’s also a rugged version called the T7 Shield (shown above). It adds drop, water and dust resistance. Samsung is offering $80 off the 4TB version, bringing it down to $270. There is also $40 in savings on the 2TB version of the Shield, while the 1TB version is just $80 after a $30 discount.
Note that the T7-related deals are only available on World Backup Day. April 1 is too late.
Another option is the Samsung USB Type-C Flash Drive, which is is so small it makes the T7 look hefty. That’s one of the reason our reviewer loved it. And the 256GB version of this keychain-size SSD is only $33 until April 2.
Don’t miss Western Digital discounts
Rival WD has it’s own set of discounts for World Backup Day. Its My Passport SSD is slim, light and very portable but also rugged. The Cult of Mac review says “it’s ideal for people who’ve outgrown the storage built into their MacBook or other laptop.” Western Digital is offering the 2TB version at $138, a savings of $22.
SanDisk is a WD subsidiary, and Amazon has a range of deals on SD cards from this well-known brand. A 1TB microSD is $103, a 25% discount. A 512GB SanDisk microSD card is $40, which is 335 off. Both come with the adapter needed to plug the drive into a full-size SD reader.
Save on the Transcend JetDrive Lite 330, too

All MacBook Pro users should know about the Transcend JetDrive Lite 330, a memory card that sits flush in the SD slot in Apple’s card slot. The Cult of Mac called it the best use of the SD reader in a MacBook.
It’s on sale now. The 1TB version is ordinarily $190, but Amazon has it for $110. That’s 42% off. The 512GB version is now $70, a 22% savings.
Any of these drives are well suited for Time Machine or manually making duplicate copies of of important files. Don’t let World Backup Day pass without having some method for keeping your critical data safe.
