A slipup by a retail employee revealed that the upcoming iPad 10 will support the Apple Pencil 2. That’s a change from the current version of Apple’s most affordable tablet, which is compatible with the original version of the stylus with fewer features.
Update: No, it does not. There are many changes in the iPad 10, but it still supports Apple Pencil 1.
The next budget iPad is expected to launch any day now. This is only the latest leak revealing info about it.
Pencil 2 support soon to be in all iPads
iPad does not need a stylus for ordinary use, but one is useful for taking handwritten notes, sketching, signing documents and more. Hence the launch of the Apple Pencil in 2015. The second-gen version debuted in 2018.
The newer model magnetically clings to the side of the tablet and wirelessly charges there. It also includes a touch-sensitive function button not in the first version.
It seems the soon-to-be-released iPad 10 will support the updated stylus. A post on Twitter includes pictures of a Speck case for the “iPad (2022)” that’s supposedly already available at the national retailer Target. The images show the case “works with Apple Pencil (2nd Gen).”
Every tablet in the budget iPad line going back to 2019 has supported the original Apple Pencil, and now it seems iPad 10 is moving to the updated version.
Other models have already made the switch. iPad Pro, iPad mini and iPad Air all use the second-generation systems, which means this is the end of the line for the first-gen Apple Pencil.
More iPad 10 rumors
The 2022 iPad is reportedly up for a redesign. Ands Apple Pencil 2 support helps confirm this, as the current model does not have the flat edges needed by the stylus in order to wirelessly transfer power.
The Speck case in Target shows that the iPad 10 will have four speakers, two on the top edge and two on the bottom edge. Previous models have had half that many.
However, the packaging for the case does not reveal whether the upcoming ing iPad will hold onto its Home button, or if it will switch to USB-C. Screen size also remains a mystery, though previous leaks have indicated the display will grow slightly.
Apple has released a new version of the budget iPad every autumn since 2019. The tenth in this line is expected before the end of October.
