Apple TV+ set a premiere date of April 29 and put out an initial trailer for the Apple Original horror-thriller series Shining Girls on Friday. And it’s seriously spooky. What with all the blurred reality and scary-shapeshifting-killer vibes, the trailer makes the show look both disturbing and disorienting.
Based on a best-selling novel
Based on Lauren Beukes’ bestselling novel, Shining Girls follows Kirby Mazrachi (Moss) as a Chicago newspaper archivist whose journalistic ambitions got put on hold after she suffered a traumatic assault. When Mazrachi learns that a recent murder mirrors her own case, she partners with seasoned-yet-troubled reporter Dan Velazquez (Wagner Moura) to uncover her attacker’s identity.
Soon they realize the cold cases are inextricably linked. But their own personal traumas and Mazrachi’s blurred reality allow her assailant to remain one step ahead. In addition to Moss and Moura, the gripping drama stars Phillipa Soo, Amy Brenneman and Jamie Bell.
Hailing from MRC Television and produced by Appian Way, the metaphysical thriller stars Emmy Award-winning actress Elisabeth Moss (The Handmaid’s Tale, Mad Men). She also serves as an executive producer. Emmy Award winner Michelle MacLaren (Breaking Bad) directed the first two episodes.
Showrunner Silka Luisa adapted the the book for television. The eight-episode series will premiere on Apple TV+. The first three episodes air on Friday, April 29. A new episode follows every Friday.
